Favourite Wimbleball Fly Patterns

Blue Flash Damsel

A great fly all year round fly, fished on a floating line with a long leader around the margins in the warmer months can be deadly, but also very popular early and late season with intermediate and slow sink lines.

Tequila Blob

A great fly for use on the top dropper as an attractor or on the point with a team of buzzers washing line style. No idea why this fly is so popular but it just is, a must to have in your box even if just on a bright day and you’re struggling .

Mini Booby

Sizes and colour vary depending on our anglers, but our regulars recommend usually Black, White, green & white and Black & Green.
Hook size usually a short shank size 12 or 14.

Foam beetle

Coch-y-Bhonddu style, for our often spectacular hatch in May/June. However the fish remember them and can still be productive when fishing are taking off the top or just sub surface throughout the summer.

Black & Green lure

Many variations are used by our regulars, especially good early season. Often tungsten or gold head varieties with long maribou tails. The Ally McCoist version is a particular favourite, as are tadpole versions.

Daddy Longlegs

Always a favourite, shown on catch returns throughout the summer and into the autumn, plenty of fields around for them to hatch and blow onto the water, especially in the Ruggs/Bessoms area.

Hot Head Daiwl Bach

Great from May onwards, usually part of a team washing line style, floating, sink tip and slow sink lines.

Buzzer

Many styles and colours, midge hatches are often prolific throughout the day on the lake so always a good option.

Booby Dabbler

Traditionally an Irish Loch fly but works really well on Wimbleball, especially the back end when large caddis and Daddy’s are on the water.
